The Works

The construction of a new memorial garden including hard landscaping and a freestanding serpentine wall. This included the breaking up and removal of existing hard landscaping. Excavation work for the new Memorial wall and walkway. Construction of foundations & footings incurred both reinforced & mass fill concrete. The new brick serpentine wall has integrated benching with stone capping and new surface water drainage system. Alteration and enlargement of existing car parking area and alterations and refurbishment of the existing flower court, including the installation of new reinforced concrete bases for the Columbaria benches and sceptre, new granite sets, and resin bonded surfacing to the path, re –instatement of existing soft landscaped area and the installation of new handrails.

Site conditions and working restrictions:

This was a highly complex and logistical project being in an area of sensitive nature. The works had to be planned over a period of 12 weeks taking into account strict access restrictions to the memorial garden (Monday 7.30am to Friday 5.00pm) and Flower court garden (Thursday 7.30am to 5.00pm).

The management and programme of works for this project was extremely complicated as all deliveries and muck away lorry’s had to arrive to the Memorial Garden compound between the hours of 7.30am to 9.00am or between 4.00pm to 5.00pm to avoid disturbing funeral services on the site.

Given the nature of the works, the management team overseeing the project, had to structure the working activities on the master programme to consider the need to re-open the flower court garden between Tuesdays to Thursdays to the general public. This meant the areas of work in the flower court garden had to be left in a safe and clean manner, giving respect to the public grieving for their loved ones.

The project manager onsite had to report to the management team responsible for the crematoriums on a daily basis to discuss working activities to ensure no works disrupted any funeral service. This frequently caused delays and stoppages that the onsite team had to resolve and find a solution to minimise delay to the project duration.
